Working with Apps in Q-Play

This guide covers what apps are, how to add one to your presentation, and the settings that are available in every app. It is a general guide — the specific settings for each individual app are covered in that app's own guide.

For an introduction to creating and editing presentations, see our guide on how to use presentations. For guides on specific apps, visit our apps overview.

1. What is an app?

Apps are what display content on your screens. An app could show an image, a video, a clock, a news feed, integration data, or many other things. You place one or more apps on a slide to build up what the viewer sees.

Apps do not need an integration to work — many apps are standalone. Integrations, on the other hand, always need an app to display their output.

2. Finding apps

When you are inside a presentation, the left-hand panel has two tabs: Apps and Layers. Click Apps to open the app library.

The library shows all available apps as a grid of tiles, each with an icon and a name. You can search for an app by name using the search bar at the top of the panel.

3. Adding an app to your slide

You have two ways to add an app:

  • Click an app tile to add it to the center of your slide at its default size.
  • Drag an app tile from the panel and drop it onto the canvas to place it exactly where you want it.

Once placed, the app appears on the canvas selected and ready to move or resize. The right-hand panel switches from Slide settings to that app's own settings.

Most apps are placed at a default size in the center of the slide.

4. App settings

When an app is selected, the right-hand panel shows its settings. At the top you will always see:

  • The app name and a delete icon (trash) to remove it from the slide
  • The app version number
  • A short description of what the app does
  • A "Read our guide" link, which takes you to that app's own dedicated guide

Below that, the panel shows one or more collapsible sections. Which sections appear depends on the app — every app has at least a General and an Advanced section. Any additional sections (such as Data sources, Template settings, or App Settings) are specific to each app and explained in that app's guide.

5. Advanced settings

Every app has an Advanced section at the bottom of the settings panel. Scroll down and click Advanced to expand it.

Here is what each setting does:

Pixel editing: Switches between editing placement and size as a percentage of the screen, or in exact pixels. Pixel editing can be easier when you need precise control. Read more in our pixel control guide.

Placement: Sets where on the screen the app sits, as an X and Y value. You can enter negative values if you want part of the app to extend off the edge of the slide.

Size: Sets the width and height of the app.

Opacity: Controls how transparent the app is, from fully visible to fully transparent. Opacity affects the entire app — including any images or videos inside it.

Rounded corners: Adds rounded corners to the app. The higher the value, the more rounded the corners become.

Background color: Sets a background color behind the app's content.

Show app error on playback: Controls whether an error is shown on screen during playback, or only visible in the editor.

6. Removing an app

You have two ways to remove an app from a slide:

  • Select the app on the canvas, then click the trash icon at the top of the right-hand settings panel. The app is removed immediately with a single click.
  • Double-click the trash icon on the app tile in the app panel. The double-click acts as a confirmation, so the app is not removed by accident.
